Air Force Secret Fighter Jet - The US Air Force has quietly built and put into service a brand new prototype aircraft that could become the next generation of fighter jets, a top acquisition official said on Tuesday.
Dr. Will Roper, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, revealed during the 2020 Virtual Air, Space and Cyber Conference that the new aircraft is part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, which defies traditional categorizations of a single platform consisting of a network of advanced fighters, sensors and weapons in an evolving and unpredictable threat.

"NGAD is currently designing, assembling, testing in the digital world - researching things that would cost time and money to wait for results in the physical world," he said. "NGAD has come so far that the full-scale flight demonstrator has already flown in the physical world."

During a roundtable with reporters, Roper declined to elaborate on the project, except that the ship was created using digital engineering, which allows the service to bypass the standard manufacturing process for parts and gives developers more flexibility in designing and changing blueprints. The service announced Monday that all weapons produced using digital concepts will have an "e-" prefix in an effort to showcase these innovative processes.
The new plane "breaks many records and shows that digital engineering is not an accident," Roper said. He declined to comment on whether the defense industry was involved in the venture.
While we talk about the accelerated process of digital methods, "we don't want our adversaries to know what they are," Roper added.
The news comes four years after the Air Force laid out the first plans for what future fighters might look like.

At the 2019 Paris Air Show, Roper said there are ongoing discussions within the service about the need for a proposed sixth-generation fighter concept that could be a successor to the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter or something more complex. In October, the service cut the ribbon on the Advanced Aircraft Program Executive Office during a ceremony at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
The Air Force hopes to move forward quickly with its futuristic projects. Last year, Roper debuted the Digital Century Series acquisition model, with the goal of using interconnected, flexible software and prototypes of competing technologies to build a fighter jet in about five years. The service recently completed a business case analysis on the validity of the model, according to Defense News.
The Navy revealed last month that it had created its own NGAD program office in an effort to accelerate the introduction of a new fighter jet before 2030, according to USNI News. But plans and discussions with industry are at a very early stage, USNI said.
The Air Force showed it could accelerate and produce aircraft: The first "Century Series" aircraft initiative debuted in the 1950s, producing fighter-bomber variants like the F-100 Super Sabre, which took about two and a half years to develop.

While many envision a futuristic manned fighter jet as the successor to today's fifth-generation platforms, Roper said the NGAD program could include fighter jets and autonomous drones fighting side-by-side.
For example, the autonomous Skyborg – which aims to combine artificial intelligence with a human piloting a fighter jet – is intended for reusable unmanned aerial vehicles in a team mission between a pilot and an unmanned crew; drones are considered "affordable" or cheap enough to be destroyed without significant cost.
In July, the agency selected Boeing Co., General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., Kratos Unmanned Aerial Systems Inc. and Northrop Grumman Systems Corp. to proceed with the Skyborg program.

LONDON: The Air Force has yet to name a winner among the companies still vying to build the service's sixth-generation jet, but the final cut of choices is "not too far off," a senior service leader told Breaking Defense at the weekend.
While Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall declined to say when the service will select a manufacturer for the fighter, which will be the cornerstone of the next-generation Air Dominance family of systems, he offered little insight into the trajectory of the top-secret program.

"It's not imminent, but it's not too far away," Kendall said in an exclusive interview at the Royal International Air Tattoo. "There's a little tip I'll give you."
The Air Force has confirmed three parts of the NGAD program so far: a sixth-generation manned fighter, the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile currently under development, and a suite of drones — what Kendall calls a "cooperative aircraft" — that will augment piloted fighters in battle.
In June, Kendall announced that the NGAD fighter had entered the design, production and development phase, leading to speculation that the Air Force had selected a prime contractor for the program. Later that month, however, Kendall said there was still competition for NGAD, raising further questions about the state of the program.
Although Kendall declined to answer most of Breaking Defense's questions about NGAD, he said the program will not have a single first in the "systems integrator" overseeing the assembly of the family of systems, and that the Air Force has a separate effort to acquire each of the elements.

"The overall integrator will probably be the government, possibly with help from industry," he said. "The NGAD platform itself will have a traditional prime contractor."
The Air Force declined to discuss which airlines are involved in NGAD. Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman could potentially produce a sixth-generation fighter, but it is unclear whether all three are currently still involved in the ongoing competition.
At least one full-scale NGAD combat demonstrator made its first flight in 2020. Air Force officials declined to provide more information about the aircraft's manufacturer or its capabilities, though they clarified that digital engineering is a critical technology that has allowed the service to evolve much faster than viewers expected.
"What we did was an experimental prototype," Kendall said in June. "Essentially, we had an X-plane program that was designed to de-risk some of the key technologies that we would need for a production program."

Kendall said the Air Force plans to field the NGAD "by the end of the decade." How much the service will stop buying has not yet been revealed. The US Air Force has revealed concept art of its new fighter jet, which was designed, built and tested in secret.
Last September, the USAF's top acquisition representative, Will Roper, told Defense News: "We've already built and operated a full-scale real flight demonstrator, and we've broken records in that. We're ready to build the next generation of aircraft in a way that has never been done before.”
The new aircraft, which is intended to replace the F-22, is part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program.
